Why this site?

There are libraries on Kant — and yet it is hard to find an account that starts at the beginning, leaves out nothing essential, and can actually be tried out. That is what this site attempts.

A way in, not a quarry

Kant has a reputation for being impenetrable, and that is rarely the fault of the thought — usually it is the order. Start with the Critique of Pure Reason and you meet terms that are only explained later. This site arranges the material so it can be read front to back: life, knowledge, ethics, aesthetics, politics, enlightenment.

Explaining without flattening

We write our own plain summaries — but we don't drop things for being inconvenient. Where Kant draws a distinction that is easy to skim past (analytic and synthetic, legality and morality), it is stated here explicitly. Simplification that distorts the thought is no help at all.

Made to be tried, not just read

The categorical imperative is a test, not a slogan. So this site offers a maxim tester, a judgment sorter, flashcards and a quiz: put in your own maxim and watch where it fails. You have only understood a procedure once you have run it.

Kant in his own words, clearly marked

Kant's own sentences are in the public domain, and we quote them where they are sharper than any paraphrase — as a rule with work and year at the quotation (the English renderings are our own translations unless a translator is named). What Kant says and what we say about it stays distinguishable.

Sourced, not asserted

Beneath each section stands what it rests on; the sources page collects it all. The basis is freely licensed Wikipedia articles (CC BY-SA 4.0) and the works themselves — verifiable rather than taken on trust.

Calm by design

No ads, no pop-ups, no cookies — only a cookie-free visitor count. Fonts and images live on our own server, light or dark, on any device. A text that demands concentration shouldn't have to fight the page it sits on.

Spotted a mistake?

The history of philosophy is full of fine distinctions, and we make mistakes like anyone else. If you find something wrong, foreshortened or unclear, we'd welcome a note via the contact in the imprint — every correction helps.
