Transcendental

Kant's method: inquiry into the conditions of the possibility of knowledge — not to be confused with “transcendent” (otherworldly).

“I call all cognition transcendental that is occupied not so much with objects as with our mode of cognition of objects …,” Kant writes. Transcendental philosophy therefore does not ask what we know, but: how is knowledge possible at all?

Transcendent, by contrast, is whatever exceeds any possible experience (God, immortality) — of which, for Kant, no knowledge is possible.
